When we experience a personal setback or crisis, what should we be able to expect in terms of support from our friends and family?

If my experience is typical, you’ll likely hear a few of these: “let me know if you need anything” and maybe a few of these: “let me know what I can do to help”.  Mostly it seems, people aren’t great at curiously inquiring how they can support you and then actually doing it. It is what it is.

So, what’s a person to do?

The answer is surprisingly simple – ask for what you need!

But that is so hard! Why as men are we particularly poor at asking for what we need? Who knows and who cares – but it’s generally true. If you’re one of those men, don’t beat yourself up because most of us are in the same boat.

I have been very poor at this my entire life. But I’m getting better. I’m mindfully working on it. Because I know The Truth. So, what is The Truth?

If You Don’t Ask, You Don’t Get.

And remember how you feel when you have really supported someone – you feel great, right? So, you are doing people a favour when you let them support you. They get a lot of benefit too.

A couple of tips as you proceed on your journey to get better at asking for help or support for what you need.

  • Figure out what you need.
  • After the What, ask Who, When, Where.
  • Make the ask. Be specific.

We get there faster and accomplish more with support.
